You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck in the Past

Sometimes the past keeps showing up in the present. You might know you’re safe, yet your body reacts with tension, fear, or shutdown. Many people experiencing trauma, PTSD, or chronic anxiety feel this disconnect between knowing and feeling. It often means the nervous system has not fully processed the experience.

Our therapists integrate EMDR treatment with grounding and nervous system regulation so your brain can reprocess the memory safely. The goal is not to force exposure but to help your mind and body recognize the event is over, allowing you to feel calmer, more present, and more in control in daily life.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is structured therapy that helps your brain process difficult or painful experiences so they don’t feel as overwhelming anymore. Instead of talking through every detail, EMDR supports your nervous system in healing in a way that feels manageable and respectful of your pace.

How EMDR works in the brain

EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing model. Normally the brain integrates experiences during sleep and rest. During trauma the stress response blocks integration. The memory becomes stored with original body sensations, beliefs, and fear responses.

Bilateral stimulation activates both hemispheres while the memory is held in awareness. This allows memory reconsolidation to occur. In simple terms the brain updates the memory from present danger to past event. After processing the memory remains the emotional charge drops.

Areas EMDR Therapy Can Support

Trauma and PTSD

EMDR trauma therapy helps process distressing memories so they no longer feel present or triggering, whether the experience was recent or years ago.

Grief and Loss

Helps process complicated grief, unresolved loss, and lingering emotional pain so healing can move forward.

Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Effective for people caught in ongoing worry, hypervigilance, or sudden panic by calming the nervous system and reducing fear responses.

Stress and Performance Pressure

Useful for professionals, students, and high performers wanting to reduce mental blocks and feel more confident and focused.

Depression and Emotional Numbness

Supports individuals whose past experiences continue to impact mood, motivation, or sense of identity.

Negative Self Beliefs

Targets deeply rooted beliefs about worth, safety, or control that formed after difficult experiences.

EMDR vs talk therapy

Talk therapy works through conscious reflection. You describe experiences, identify patterns, and understand how the past shaped the present. This mainly engages the thinking brain. It helps you make meaning of your reactions and develop strategies to respond differently.

The problem is that understanding does not automatically change the survival response. You can logically know you are safe and still feel panic because the reaction is stored in emotional memory networks, not reasoning.

EMDR targets the level where the reaction originates. Instead of analyzing the story, the memory is activated while the nervous system stays regulated.

Bilateral stimulation allows the brain to reconsolidate the memory so it is stored as something finished rather than current.

After processing the shift usually feels automatic. No longer “I know I am safe but still feel afraid,” but more like “I remember it but my body does not react anymore.”

In simple terms, talk therapy helps you manage reactions while EMDR reduces the need for reactions.

Many people who seek EMDR already understand their patterns in detail. Insight explains why a trigger exists. Processing changes whether the trigger activates.

FAQs for EMDR

  • EMDR is especially helpful for processing experiences that still feel emotionally charged or hard to move past, even if they happened years ago.

  • The length of EMDR therapy varies.  Some people notice shifts in a few sessions, while others take a more gradual approach depending on their goals and history.

  • Sessions are structured but gentle, with plenty of support. We will focus on your experience while using bilateral stimulation and grounding tools to help your nervous system integrate memories differently.

  • No. EMDR is not hypnosis and you remain fully awake, aware, and in control the entire time. The eye movements simply help your brain process memories differently while you stay grounded and able to stop at any moment.

  • Some people notice relief after a few sessions, especially with a single memory or recent event. More complex or long term trauma usually takes longer because we first build coping skills and process experiences gradually at a pace your nervous system can handle.

  • Yes — we offer both virtual sessions (in Arizona and Florida) and in-person sessions in Los Angeles.
