Therapy for Race-Based Trauma in Los Angeles

What is race-based trauma?

Racial trauma, also known as race-based traumatic stress, is mental and emotional injury due to racism and discrimination. The Black, Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) community are affected by this as we fight through white supremacy.

Traumatic incidents can be direct racism to an individual, vicarious trauma through witnessing violence towards the BIPOC community, and generational trauma, which is the trauma we carry from our ancestors.

How can I cope with trauma?

The tricky part with trauma is that it doesn’t only undermine our mental health. Unless processed, that same trauma can live in our bodies. It can leave people feeling alone and have a lack of trust from others. It can cause people to be in a constant state of panic or anxiety, wondering when the next bad thing will happen. Holding on to unprocessed racial trauma can lead to exhaustion, low-self esteem, and clinical depression.

In therapy, you can learn to address the emotional and mental aches you carry. Our team of culturally competent clinicians can help unpack the history of struggles so that you can start to make meaning of it. Therapy can guide you to take better care of yourself in the midst of all the chaos that communities of color experience. With our therapists, you no longer have to bear this on your own. We can help you process your experiences without judgment, and help you heal the aches of racial stress.

Our approach

Many of us enter a room and quickly notice who is represented — and who isn’t. We may look for people who share parts of our racial or cultural identities, understand our lived experiences, or simply make us feel less alone. When those connections aren’t present, it can be difficult to feel fully at home or trust that important parts of our experiences will be understood.

At Diversified Therapy LA, we recognize that communities of color can have both shared and deeply personal experiences. Some may be sources of connection, pride, and celebration, while others can be painful or complicated to carry. We make space for all of these experiences without making assumptions about what your identity means to you.

Our approach is warm, honest, and collaborative. Together, we can explore how your identity, culture, relationships, and family history have shaped the way you understand yourself and move through the world. This may include looking at generational trauma—the ways painful experiences and survival patterns can be carried through families—and how those patterns may continue to affect your life today. Our goal is to help you make sense of your experiences, recognize patterns, and feel more grounded in who you are.
