Therapy for Mixed Race People in Los Angeles
Therapy where you don’t have to prove or explain your identity
Being mixed race can come with a lot of different experiences. Feeling connected to more than one culture. Feeling caught somewhere in between. Having other people decide who you are before you've said a word.
There's no one right way to identify. We'll listen to and respect whatever language feels most true to you.
Mixed race therapy gives you a place to talk about these experiences with someone who understands that identity and belonging don't always fit neatly into a box.
You don't have to minimize parts of yourself here. You don't have to spend your sessions explaining why something matters to you before you can get to the part that hurts.
What Is Therapy for Mixed Race People?
Working With a Biracial or Multiracial Therapist
Whether you call yourself mixed race, biracial, multiracial, multicultural, or something else entirely, the language is yours to choose.
What matters is working with someone who is willing to explore and understand your intersecting identities and experiences.
Who this is for
You might be looking for a mixed-race therapist because you’re actively trying to understand your identity. Or maybe you’re coming to therapy for anxiety, relationships, family stress, or something completely different - you just want to know that your therapist can understand this part of you too.
This space may feel especially helpful if you:
Sometimes feel caught between cultures or communities
Have wondered whether you’re “enough” to claim part of your identity
Feel disconnected from one side of your family or background
Have people make assumptions about your race
Notice yourself changing how you act depending on who you’re around
Have experienced racism, colorism, exclusion, or racial invalidation
Want to better understand what being mixed means to you
You don’t need to have the right label or know exactly what you want to explore. We can start wherever you are.
Areas we support
Feeling "Not Enough"
For clients who have been told, or have come to believe, that they are not Black, Asian, Latino, Indigenous, White, or culturally connected enough to claim part of their heritage. Therapy can help you separate your identity from other people's rules about who gets to belong.
Code-Switching and Shapeshifting
For people who adjust how they speak, behave, dress, or express themselves depending on the room. We can look at when this has helped you feel safe, when it's become exhausting, and how to feel more grounded across different spaces.
Belonging and Acceptance
For those who feel caught between communities, excluded from cultural spaces, or pressured to change themselves to fit in. We can explore what belonging means when it's grounded in authenticity rather than acceptance at any cost.
Family and Generational Dynamics
For clients navigating cultural differences, racial misunderstandings, family expectations, or relatives who relate to race differently. This may also include feeling disconnected from one side of your family, or grieving cultural knowledge that was never passed down.
Racial Identity Therapy
For clients who want to better understand their mixed race identity and define it in a way that feels authentic. This may include exploring family history, culture, community, social experiences, or how your identity has changed over time.
Colorism and How Others Perceive You
For those affected by colorism, texturism, ambiguous appearance, or proximity to whiteness. Therapy can offer room to process the complicated ways appearance affects belonging, privilege, safety, and how others treat you.
Racial Microaggressions and Identity Policing
For clients who are frequently questioned, exoticized, misidentified, or told what they "look like." We can help you process the cumulative emotional weight of these experiences and build boundaries that feel right for you.
Relationships and Dating
For people navigating how race, culture, identity, and family acceptance affect dating, friendships, or intimate relationships. Therapy can help you communicate these experiences without minimizing their importance.
Race in the Workplace
For professionals dealing with tokenization, discrimination, code-switching, imposter feelings, or pressure to represent an entire racial group. We support you in making sense of workplace dynamics while protecting your confidence and well-being.
Racial Trauma
For clients carrying the emotional effects of racism, exclusion, invalidation, or repeated experiences of not being fully seen. Therapy can help you process what happened without treating your response as the problem.
Anxiety, Relationships, Career, and Life Transitions
Your identity doesn't have to be the main reason you come to therapy. We also support mixed race clients with anxiety, trauma, relationships, self-esteem, career concerns, family stress, and major life transitions.
BIPOC Therapy and Racial Identity Work
Being mixed race is one experience among many that our practice holds.
We offer BIPOC therapy for Black, Indigenous, and people of color across a range of backgrounds, whether or not identity is the reason you're reaching out. Some clients come specifically to work through racial trauma or the exhaustion of being the only one in the room. Others come for anxiety, maybe a relationship that's fraying, or general support with stressful life experiences.
Our approach to therapy for mixed-race people
There isn't one way to be mixed. Even people with similar backgrounds can have completely different relationships with their race, culture, family, and identity.
We'll never tell you how you should identify or assume we already understand your experience. We'll take the time to learn what your background means to you.
You can feel proud of your identity and still carry grief or confusion around it. You can feel deeply connected to one culture and distant from another. You can acknowledge certain privileges while also talking honestly about racism, exclusion, or not feeling fully accepted.
There's room for all of that here. You don't have to choose a side, prove that you belong, or make your experience easier for someone else to understand.

Our Connection to This Work
Diversified Therapy LA was founded by Camille Tenerife, LMFT, a Black and mixed race therapist. Her own experiences moving between different racial and cultural spaces shaped the kind of practice she wanted to create.
Camille knows that being mixed can hold pride, connection, confusion, grief, privilege, and exclusion, sometimes all at once. She also knows what it feels like to be seen differently depending on who you're with or where you are.
That personal understanding is part of our foundation. But we won't assume your experience looks like ours. We want to know your story, and to give you room to decide what being mixed means to you.
Why Work With Us
You Can Show Up as Your Whole Self
You don't have to choose a side, describe yourself in fractions, or prove that you belong. Whether you identify as mixed race, biracial, multiracial, multicultural, or as 100% of one identity and 100% of another, all parts of you are welcome here.
We Won't Assume We Already Know Your Story
Being mixed race doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. We'll get to know your particular family, your cultures, your experiences, and the ways you see yourself.
You Get to Decide What We Focus On
Race and identity can be the main focus of therapy, something we talk about when it comes up, or simply part of the larger context of your life. We don't have to make every session about being mixed race to work with a therapist who understands it.
FAQs for therapy for mixed-race people

Not at all. You don't need to choose a label or find the perfect words before starting therapy. This can be the place where you take your time figuring out what feels right to you.
-
Absolutely. You can come for anxiety, trauma, relationships, career concerns, or anything else happening in your life. The difference is that your racial and cultural experiences won't be overlooked when they matter.
-
You're still welcome here. We can explore whatever comes up around connection, distance, curiosity, grief, or feeling like cultural knowledge wasn't passed down to you.
-
How other people see you doesn't get to determine whether your identity is valid. Therapy can help you make sense of the gap between how you understand yourself and how others categorize or respond to you.
