Interracial Couples Therapy in Los Angeles
What is interracial couples therapy?
Navigating cultural differences in a relationship can be challenging. If you’re in an interracial or multicultural relationship, you may be familiar with the unique questions and tensions that can arise when you and your partner come from different backgrounds.
You may feel stuck in the same communication patterns or find yourselves avoiding certain conversations altogether. Thoughts like, “They’ll never understand,” or “What’s the point? We’re not going to resolve this,” can begin to create distance between you. Differences in family expectations, gender roles, traditions, communication styles, and personal values can add even more layers to work through.
At Diversified Therapy LA, we understand what may come with bringing different cultures, identities, and experiences into one relationship. We help couples better understand their differences, communicate their emotions more openly, and create new traditions that reflect who they are together—not simply what either partner was taught a relationship should look like.
Our goal is to help you approach difficult conversations with more curiosity and care, strengthen the sense of safety within your relationship, and build a connection in which both partners feel seen, respected, and understood.
What can we expect from couples therapy?
Couples sessions are 50 minutes long. During the first session, we’ll get to know you as a couple, learn about your relationship history, and begin identifying what you’d like to work on together.
The next two sessions are typically individual assessment sessions—one with each partner. These conversations give each person space to share more about their background, experiences, and perspective on the relationship. From there, we’ll establish shared goals and begin exploring the patterns affecting your connection. Depending on your needs, future sessions may include education, skill-building, deeper emotional work, and opportunities to practice new ways of communicating.
What topics or concerns do you help couples navigate in couples therapy?
We welcome conversations about the issues affecting your relationship. Common topics include communication, conflict, trust, finances, sex and intimacy, family dynamics, racial and cultural differences, gender roles, life transitions, and differing values or expectations.
Couples therapy may not be appropriate when there is active intimate partner violence or when participating could place either partner at greater risk. We assess for safety and, when needed, can provide referrals to more appropriate support and resources.

Interracial relationships can be deeply fulfilling. Bringing together two or more cultures creates opportunities to learn from one another, build meaningful traditions, and create a relationship that reflects who you are together. Through interracial couples therapy in Los Angeles, we help partners navigate cultural differences while strengthening their connection.
In couples therapy, the relationship is our client. Rather than deciding who is right or wrong, we help you recognize the strengths already present in your relationship, better understand one another’s needs, and address the patterns creating distance between you.
Our approach is grounded in empathy, cultural awareness, and evidence-based practices. We create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where both partners can speak openly about their experiences—including racial and cultural topics that may feel difficult to explain or discuss at home. Together, we’ll work toward conversations in which both of you feel heard, respected, and understood.
Couples therapy can also help you look beneath recurring arguments and understand what each person may really be trying to communicate. We’ll identify unhelpful patterns, develop new ways of responding to one another, and provide practical tools you can use outside of sessions. Our goal is to help you deepen trust, strengthen your friendship, and create a shared sense of meaning in your relationship.
